Divisional charts: what the sixteen vargas are for

The birth chart, or D-1, places each planet in one of twelve signs. A divisional chart subdivides each sign further and rebuilds the chart from those subdivisions, producing a second view of the same moment focused on a particular area of life.

Shodashavarga means the set of sixteen. Each has a domain:

• ·D-1 Rasi — the whole life, the body, the general shape of things.
• ·D-2 Hora — wealth and resources.
• ·D-3 Drekkana — siblings, courage, initiative.
• ·D-4 Chaturthamsa — property, home, fixed assets.
• ·D-7 Saptamsa — children and progeny.
• ·D-9 Navamsa — marriage, dharma, and the inner strength of every planet.
• ·D-10 Dasamsa — career, action in the world, standing.
• ·D-12 Dwadasamsa — parents and lineage.
• ·D-16 Shodasamsa — vehicles, comforts, pleasures.
• ·D-20 Vimsamsa — spiritual practice and devotion.
• ·D-24 Chaturvimsamsa — education and learning.
• ·D-27 Bhamsa — inherent strengths and weaknesses.
• ·D-30 Trimsamsa — adversity and misfortune.
• ·D-40 Khavedamsa — maternal lineage.
• ·D-45 Akshavedamsa — paternal lineage and character.
• ·D-60 Shashtiamsa — past-life karma, the finest division.

How they are actually used

A varga does not override the birth chart. It refines it. The standard method is to read a promise in D-1 and then test it in the relevant varga: a marriage indication in D-1 checked against D-9, a career indication checked against D-10. A planet that is strong in D-1 and also strong in its varga is dependable. One that is strong in D-1 and collapses in the varga tends to promise more than it delivers.

Navamsa deserves special mention. Beyond marriage, D-9 is used as a general strength test for every planet, which is why it is the varga most practitioners consult first after the birth chart.

Where precision breaks down

D-60 divides each sign into sixty parts. One part corresponds to roughly thirty seconds of birth time. If your recorded birth time is rounded to the nearest five or ten minutes, as most are, your D-60 is essentially arbitrary.

This is worth stating plainly because it is the most common over-claim in modern astrology software. The finer the division, the more birth-time accuracy it demands. D-9 and D-10 tolerate a few minutes of uncertainty. D-40, D-45 and D-60 do not. If your time came from memory rather than a hospital record, treat the finest vargas as indicative and weight your reading toward D-1, D-9 and D-10.
